CARA- Casa Agrícola Rebelo Afonso
The tradition of winemaking and olive growing of the Rebelo and Afonso families goes further back to the beginning of the 20th century, but it was by the hand of João Paulo Rebelo Afonso that in 2012 CARA - Casa Agrícola Rebelo Afonso was born as a tribute to the well-preserved family knowledge of wine making.
Heirs to a subsistence agriculture that once characterized the northern inland Portugal, the risk-taking vision of the couples Hermínia and José Rebelo and Albertina and Luís Afonso allowed them to broaden their horizons through a more careful and intensive exploration of the lands that they owned. Like so many other families, the olive oil and wine they produced in the high lands of the Beira Alta region made the delights of the storers and shopkeepers of Oporto, the main city in the north of Portugal. The warm welcoming to their goods dictated the need to increase production and the next generation followed the footsteps of its predecessors. Ludovina Rebelo and José Luís Afonso dedicated themselves to the restructuring of older vineyards and produced table wines but also generous wines, particularly Port wines. Years later, the acquired experience and the awareness of the quality of our terroirs led to the creation of a brand that exclusively uses the national grape varieties to produce distinctive and unique red and white wines.
The Rebelo Afonso family owns approximately 10 ha in the Douro area spread by the counties of Meda and Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
